Phil and Barbara Strom were deeply involved with North Shore Elementary School, a public school that once served 200 students and acted as a vital connector for their small rural community on the North Shore. When the school closed in 2001, Phil immediately began working with other community members. Long story short, they purchased the school from the district for just $1 and transformed it into a charter school—North Shore Community School. Now serving 350 students, the school specializes in connecting academics to the natural environment.
The Strom’s story is truly unique and reflects the power of legacy. It also highlights the creative possibilities that an endowment at the Community Foundation can provide.
