The Duluth Central High School Class of 1944 established the George A. Beck scholarship fund in 1964 to honor Mr. Beck, principal of Duluth Central from 1939 to 1965. This was also thought to provide a memory of “Old Central,” which was at that time destined to be replaced by a new high school. Subsequently, other classes, alumni groups and individuals contributed to this fund, and it became known as the Duluth Central High School Alumni Scholarship.
Eligible applicants must be graduates of Duluth East, Duluth Denfeld, or Harbor City International School and reside within the original geographic boundaries of Duluth Central High School. They must be attending the College of St. Scholastica, University of Minnesota Duluth, University of Wisconsin Superior, Lake Superior College, or Northwood Technical College, and demonstrate financial need.
In 2009, when the Duluth Public Schools approved the plan to consolidate high schools and close Duluth Central, the Duluth Central Sports Association established this scholarship to honor past athletes, coaches, athletic directors and the “Trojan Spirit” of Duluth’s then-oldest high school.
Eligible applicants must be graduates of Duluth East, Duluth Denfeld, or Harbor City International School and reside within the original boundaries of Duluth Central High School. They must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and have participated in at least six seasons of sports during their high school career, including at least two seasons at the varsity level.
Serving the Northland since 1945, the Duluth Lions Club has a rich tradition of community service. Following its motto, “We serve,” members do more by working together. In 2017, the centennial year for Lions Clubs nationally, the Duluth club established this annual scholarship for students who have engaged in community service and are likely to do so in the future.
Eligible applicants must be graduates of Duluth Denfeld, Duluth East, Harbor City International, Marshall School, Adult Learning Center, or Lakeview Christian Academy. They must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate community involvement or volunteer experience.
The Emile H. Mathis II Scholarship Fund recognizes the life and career of University of Wisconsin-Superior alum Emile Mathis and supports the education of future generations of UWS artists. The scholarship is available to all who will be or are degree-seeking students in the Visual Arts Department at UWS. Emile Mathis was a UWS graduate who opened the Mathis Gallery and Frame Shop in Racine, Wisconsin. He developed a talent for collecting unique prints, from Rembrandt to Whistler. Funds generated by this collection helped create this scholarship.
Eligible applicants must be graduates of any high school within the DSACF service area, homeschool, or hold a GED. They must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in the Visual Arts Department at the University of Wisconsin–Superior and demonstrate financial need.
The Erie Mining Co. Scholarship Fund is for graduating seniors at Mesabi East High School. It commemorates the company and its employees by awarding scholarships to students living where the company once operated.
Eligible applicants must be graduates of Mesabi East High School who are attending a two- or four-year school. Preference is given to those pursuing a field of study related to the minerals or mining industry.
Scholarship creator Penny Gill taught political science for 45 years at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. She fell in love with Madeline Island (Mooningwanekaaning in Ojibwe) on her first visit and bought a small cabin, eventually becoming a year-round resident. She has benefitted from higher education and wishes to share that with her Ojibwe neighbors, the original residents and caretakers of her beloved island.
Eligible applicants must be enrolled members of one of the following tribes: Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Bois Forte Band of Chippewa, Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, or Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe. Applicants must have graduated from high school or received a GED and must demonstrate financial need.
The Fred C. and Mary H. Lewis Scholarship Fund helps deserving and needy students who could not otherwise afford to attend Marshall School, a private high school in Duluth. The Lewises were longtime supporters of Marshall School, working with the school’s annual scholarship drive. Wanting to do more, they created this additional fund to help prospective Marshall students. More information about the fund is available from Marshall School.

The Lewises supported Duluth’s business community through work in their banks and with volunteer organizations. They created this fund to help develop future business leaders.
Eligible applicants must be graduates from Duluth, Superior, Proctor, Esko, or Hermantown and be enrolled as full-time MBA students at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). Applicants should have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate financial need.
Team Duluth and the Duluth/Superior Alpine Club are pleased to announce the availability of the G. Scott Ransom Scholarship. This scholarship, named in honor of the great contributions of long-time Team Duluth Head Coach Scott “Race” Ransom, is designed to provide assistance to youth members and potential members of Team Duluth, helping offset the team fee costs associated with pursuing a competitive skiing experience. Through that experience, it is hoped that youth athletes involved in Team Duluth will acquire skills to help them be successful in their future endeavors.
Youth athletes, ages 5 to 19 (or high school graduation, whichever comes first) with parental consent, living in Northeastern Minnesota or Northwestern Wisconsin.
The Gernander Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance for postsecondary education to graduating seniors of Denfeld High School with demonstrated good character who combine athletic and academic accomplishments.

This fund honors the tenets and beliefs of Greg Irons by recognizing and rewarding the efforts of students in Duluth Public Schools as well as teachers who help students succeed. Greg Irons was a lifelong Duluthian and a graduate of Duluth East High School and the University of Minnesota Duluth. In high school and college, he excelled on athletic fields as well as in his classrooms through self-motivation and perseverance. He worked for the Duluth Public Schools as a science teacher, minority student tutor and athletic coach. Greg Irons died in a hunting accident in 1989.
Eligible applicants must be graduates of Duluth Denfeld, Duluth East, Harbor City International, or the Adult Learning Center. They must demonstrate leadership, community involvement, or participation in school activities.
The Fund was created through a bequest from Henrietta Hill in memory of her grandson, Roger C. Hill Jr. In 2000, Henrietta Hill established a scholarship trust fund as a memorial to her grandson, who attended East and participated in pole vaulting. He was also active in the school band. Henrietta Hill was a longtime resident of Duluth and recognized the importance of higher education. She felt that establishing a scholarship was a fitting memorial to her grandson.
Eligible applicants must be graduates of Duluth East who have been active in track, pole vaulting, and/or music (band). They must demonstrate financial need and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
