As we honor Black History Month, we’re reminded that celebrating Black history also means investing in Black futures.
One way we partner to put that commitment into action is through the Unity Fund: a community-led grant program that advances equity, justice, and opportunity for people of African Heritage across the Northland.
The Unity Fund was created by and for African Heritage communities, with funding decisions guided by lived experience and local leadership. The Fund supports projects that remove barriers, expand access to resources, and strengthen cultural, economic, and community well-being.
In 2025 alone, the Unity Fund invested $121,500 into initiatives advancing housing access, health equity, education, cultural preservation, and support for Black-led and Black-serving organizations.
We’re excited to share that the Unity Fund will begin accepting 2026 grant proposals on February 23.
This funding opportunity is designed for organizations and grassroots efforts whose work centers African Heritage individuals and communities. Whether your project focuses on building economic opportunity, fostering belonging, improving health outcomes, or celebrating culture, we encourage you to explore whether the Unity Fund is a good fit.
We intentionally designed the application process differently and with care. It’s accessible, has fewer restrictions, and it’s a welcoming place for folks who may have little or no experience with grants.Salaam Witherspoon, Unity Fund Committee Chair
The Unity Fund advisory committee continues to shape a grantmaking process rooted in trust, accessibility, and long-term impact to ensure funding reaches the people and ideas driving meaningful change.
The Unity Fund exists because of community generosity. Every contribution, large or small, helps expand what’s possible for African Heritage communities across our region.
If you’re looking for a meaningful way to honor Black History Month, consider making a gift to the Unity Fund. Your support directly fuels community-led solutions, strengthens local leadership, and helps ensure this work continues year-round.
