Donor & Fund Advisor Rebrand FAQs

May 20, 2025

We understand that change can spark good questions—and we want you to know we’re here for you.

While our name and visual identity have evolved, our commitment to you and your philanthropic goals remains steadfast. You are a vital part of this work, and that hasn’t changed.

As Boreal Waters Community Foundation, we continue to steward your funds with care, transparency, and purpose—just as we always have. Our new name simply better reflects the full region we serve and the deep, connected values that guide our mission.

Below, you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions we’ve heard from donors and fund advisors during this transition. If there’s something more you’d like to know, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always just a call or email away.

Thank you for your trust—and for being a part of this next chapter with us.

Why is the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation changing its name?

We are rebranding to better reflect our expanding focus and commitment to the communities we serve. While our core mission remains the same—supporting local nonprofits and strengthening the region—we wanted our name to more accurately represent the evolving areas we impact across all of northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin. The new name will help us connect more effectively with current and future donors, fund advisors, and partners.

Will my fund’s name change?

No. If you have a named fund, your fund’s name will remain the same, even if the Community Foundation’s name changes. You and your designated beneficiaries can continue to reference your fund exactly as it is.

What if “Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation” is listed in my will or trust as a beneficiary? Do I need to change my will or trust to reflect the new name?

No, you do not need to make any changes to your will or trust. We have a "doing business as" (DBA) name in place, so your existing documents will still be valid. The new name does not affect the beneficiary designation or your planned gift. If you would like to update your documents to reflect our new name, feel free to do so, but it is not required.

How will this name change affect my donations or grants?

There will be no disruption to your donations, grants, or fund management. You can continue to contribute, make grants, and work with your fund advisor as usual. Any future checks, communications, or donor-related materials may reflect our new name, but all processes will remain the same.

Will the rebranding affect my account access or online portal?

No. Your access to your account and our online portal will remain unchanged. You can still log in and manage your fund as you always have. Our new name will appear on the portal, but the functionality and security of your account will stay the same.

Will I receive any updated materials reflecting the new name?

Yes. You can expect to see updated materials, including new brochures, reports, and communications, that reflect our new name and branding beginning in May 2025. You will continue to receive the same level of service and information you always have, just with a refreshed look.

Will the mission or services of the Community Foundation change?

No, our mission remains the same: to improve the quality of life in our community through philanthropic efforts. We will continue to support local nonprofits, connect donors with causes they care about, and help strengthen our region. Our new name simply reflects the broader impact we have, not a change in our services or priorities.

How can I update my communications or checks to reflect the new name?

We’ll keep you informed as we update our communication channels. For now, feel free to continue using our previous name when making donations or communicating with us. In the near future, we’ll send out specific instructions for updating checks, direct deposits, or any other paperwork that may need adjustment.

How can I learn more about the rebranding process?

We’ll keep you updated on our progress through regular communications, including emails and our website. If you have any questions or would like more information, feel free to reach out to your fund advisor or contact us directly at info@borealwaters.org. We’re happy to answer any questions you have!

How can I continue to support the Community Foundation during this transition?

Your continued support is greatly appreciated. You can make donations, advise on funds, and engage with the Foundation as you always have. If you have any questions or want to discuss new opportunities, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

You are always invited to reach out to Jessica Peterson, Development Director at jpeterson@borealwaters.org or (218) 520-1120.
