Boreal Waters Awards Over $750,000 in Scholarships to Students Across the Region

April 29, 2026

Over 130 students across the region recently learned they were awarded a scholarship through Boreal Waters to help make their next educational step more accessible.

Through the generosity of local donors, $750,000 has been awarded in scholarships to students representing 28 high schools across northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin.

The average scholarship awarded is over $5,000 and many provide support for multiple years of post-secondary education. For many students, these scholarships ease the weight of tuition, reduce the need for loans, and open the door to an opportunity that may not have felt within reach.

“These scholarships are one of the most direct ways we see the power of community in action,” said Peter Pfankuch, Regional Community Impact Specialist at Boreal Waters. “This year, we saw a record number of applications, which speaks to both the need for educational support and the determination of students across our region. It’s inspiring to see how many are already thinking about how they’ll contribute to their communities, their families, and beyond.”

This year’s recipients are pursuing a wide range of paths—from law enforcement to STEM, nursing to social work, teaching to health careers, and beyond. Some are entering technical programs or trades, while others are heading to four-year institutions.

For ZhaaZhaawaanong Greensky, the support is both practical and deeply personal.

As she continues pursuing her medical degree while raising her family, the Peter Bye Family Scholarship has helped ease financial pressure and reinforce that she is not navigating this journey alone. Her path, which is grounded in resilience and a commitment to care for others, reflects the intention behind many of the scholarships awarded each year.

I cannot explain how deeply this scholarship fund meant to me, not just the generosity but the belief in me. That belief alone was integral to my success. I am so grateful to all of you at Boreal Waters Community Foundation for providing resources and belief in students. Students have been notified of their awards, and many will be recognized during local high school scholarship ceremonies in the coming weeks—bringing together families, educators, and community members to celebrate their achievements and what lies ahead.

Each year, Boreal Waters offers more than 70 scholarship opportunities designed to reduce financial barriers and expand access to education across the region. This work is made possible not only through generous donors, but through the careful efforts of volunteer committees who review applications and select recipients.

To every donor, volunteer, and advocate who make these scholarships possible, thank you.

Because of you, students across our region are able to take their next step with greater confidence and support.
