On December 1, Boreal Waters Community Foundation will open applications for 70+ scholarships, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, for students across our region. These scholarships support students headed to 4-year colleges, 2-year community and technical colleges, apprenticeships, trade programs, and returning students.
To help students, families, and counselors prepare, our Community Impact Specialist, Peter Pfankuch, has been on the road this fall visiting high schools from Cherry, MN to Hurley, WI, meeting with hundreds of students and families, and answering great questions along the way.
After 600+ miles, countless conversations, and a whole lot of inspiration, here are a few of the most common questions, and answers, to help you get ready.
Q: I’m going to a 2-year program next year, should I wait to apply for scholarships until I transfer to a 4-year school?
A: Apply now! We have dozens of scholarships that support students going to Lake Superior College, Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College, Northwood Technical College, and more. Whether you’re pursuing a 4-year degree, 2-year degree, or apprenticeship program, we have scholarship opportunities for you!
Q: Do scholarships really make a difference?
A: In 2025, our average scholarship awarded was over $7,500.
That is the same as working 500 hours of work at $15/hour. Not only do we want to help make the cost of school cheaper, we want to help open up time for you to explore all the opportunities offered at your school.
Q: I don’t have a 4.0 GPA. Do I still have a chance?
A: Absolutely! Our 70+ scholarships are for students of all backgrounds. Not all scholarships are based on academic achievement, and many are awarded based on who you are outside the classroom.
Q: When will I know if I received a scholarship, and how is it paid?
A: Scholarships award notifications are sent directly to students in the last half of April 2026, so you can better understand your financial situation before deciding where you choose to go to school. Scholarship checks will be sent directly to the college or university you choose to go to and applied to your fall 2026 student bill.
