$822,000 in Spring Grants Fuel 130 Local Projects

June 3, 2025

Spring in northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin means more light, more movement—and more momentum. As rivers open and communities come together, that energy is showing up in real ways across our region.

This spring, Boreal Waters Community Foundation awarded over $822,000 in grants to support 130 projects across 87 local organizations. These grants are helping communities lead on the issues that matter most—mental wellness, youth leadership, food systems, cultural preservation, and more.

From small towns to shared watersheds, people are stepping up with bold ideas and local knowledge. And with support from Boreal Waters and our affiliate funds, those ideas are turning into action.

“We received 280 applications this spring, with communities requesting over $2.3 million in funding. That level of response shows just how much vision and determination exists across our communities—and also how much need there still is,” said Amber Burns, Director of Impact and Partnerships. “We’re proud to support 130 of these projects thanks to the generosity of our donors and partners. It’s a reminder that when we invest in local leadership, we help build lasting change.”

Local Impact, Close to Home

Every grant we make is rooted in trust, equity, and collaboration. Our spring grant cycle is also when our regional affiliate foundations award funding—supporting their communities in an even more localized way. With deep knowledge of local priorities, they help ensure resources flow where they’re needed most.

  • Cook County Community Fund awarded $36,699
  • South Shore Community Fund awarded $99,561
  • Eveleth Community Foundation awarded $20,684
  • Two Harbors Area Community Fund awarded $75,250
  • Each of these investments supports long-term change led by the people who live and work here.

    Grantmaking That Reflects Our Community

At Boreal Waters, we take a different approach. We walk alongside communities, not ahead of them. We listen first, build strong relationships, and invest in ideas that come from lived experience. This spring’s grant cycle is one piece of a larger story—a shared effort to build a future where everyone in the North has what they need to thrive.

In the past year alone, Boreal Waters has awarded $1.8 million in local grants and another $1.5 million in scholarships—all directed toward building stronger, more connected communities across the North.

To every donor, partner, and community leader: thank you. Your support makes this possible. Together, we’re creating a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
