The Common Thread: How Small Businesses and Nonprofits Can Support Each Other for Greater Impact

July 24, 2025

Our community is stronger when we work together - not just in spirit, but in practice.

That’s the inspiration behind The Common Thread, a new gathering designed to bring together nonprofit leaders, small business owners, and local ecosystem partners.

Co-hosted by the Duluth Area Chamber and Brico Works, and proudly sponsored by Boreal Waters Community Foundation, this two-hour strategy and storytelling session is all about connection, collaboration, and shared purpose.

Nonprofits and small businesses play vital roles in our region’s economy and wellbeing. Together, they employ more than 60% of our local workforce. Yet despite this shared impact, they often operate in silos.

The Common Thread is an invitation to change that.

Through shared stories, World Café-style conversations, and collaborative idea sharing, participants will:

  • Discover what’s possible when community-minded organizations partner with purpose
  • Identify mutual needs, strengths, and opportunities for collaboration
  • Explore real-world examples of partnerships that benefit both mission and business
  • Connect with others committed to building a more resilient, inclusive local economy

Whether you're a nonprofit seeking creative ways to sustain your mission, a small business ready to give back with intention, or a connector passionate about bridging sectors, this space is for you.

We hope you’ll join us. Together, we can weave a stronger, more connected community.
